FOUR EASY STEPS TO WRITING A HIT LYRIC - Part 1

By Molly-Ann Leikin

The last thing I do when writing a lyric, is write the lyric.

I urge my clients to try it this way:

1. At the top of a blank page, write the title of your song.

Scribble down anything and everything that comes to mind relating to the title, and what you want to say in that song.

Don’t cross anything out.

There are no wrong answers.

Hang your list on your fridge and add to it as new ideas come along.

Scribble them all down right away. If not, they’ll get insulted and go into someone else’s head.

2. at the top of another blank page, put the same title.

Write a letter to yourself saying all the things from your list. Nobody but you will ever see it. Don’t worry about spelling, punctuation, or grammar.

3. With the same title at the top of your page, using the words and phrases from your letter, write a non-rhyming lyric.

4. Write the rhyming lyric.

See? You can do it! Let me know how it turns out.
