Excerpt from How to Write a Hit Song in the Digital Age

As a tunesmith who didn’t sing, I was anonymous to the people who recorded my work and misspelled my surname on their CD’s.

Since I was single, and never invited to couples evenings, I did lunch.   So it was a big deal when country singer, Susie Allanson, whose voice I totally loved, invited me to her home for dinner.

She’d just had a big hit with Two Steps forward and Three Steps Back, which Jerry Crutchfied and I wrote for her.  Susie wanted me to meet her husband and producer, Ray Ruff, who was planning her next album.

I prettied up and brought a bottle of wine.  But when I arrived, Susie and Ray were in the middle of a vicious argument.  An hour later, they were still screaming at each other, so I quietly left through the kitchen window.

I hope they enjoyed my wine.  It had a cork.
